Safety concerns keep Haleakala park's summit closed

Advertiser Staff

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui — The summit area of Haleakala National Park will remain closed indefinitely due to unsafe conditions.

Park rangers patrolled the road and found that rocks and debris continue to collect on the road, said ranger Dominic Cardea. Heavy rains are continuing to pelt the top of the 10,000-foot volcano and the park remains without power, and phone communication is limited, he said.

"Maintenance crews and rangers are working through the closure to secure the park and clear hazards," Cardea said. "Due to forecasts of renewed storm activity, the park is extending the closure until further notice."
