Fundraiser Dec. 30 sends musicians to New Mexico

In recent music competitions, young instrumentalists competed in Honolulu for a chance to compete in the Southwest Region at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M. on Jan. 18-20, 2008.

The regional winners will go on to compete in the national competitions with winners from six other regions in the United States. These competitions will be held in Denver, Colo. March 29-April 2, 2008 at the national

conference of the Music Teachers National Association.

Competing in New Mexico will be Teresa Yi Ou, Junior High String representative; T.J. Tario, Junior High Piano winner; Asia Kiyomi Doike, Senior High String winner; Maile Cha, Senior High Piano winner; Chandra Susilo, Young Artist String (college level) winner; and Heejin Kang; Young Artist Piano representative.

The regional winners will compete with others from California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

In the past, Hawai'i has performed very well in the regional and national competitions. In 2006, Zoe Doike-Martin won both the regional and national high school string competitions and Andrew Ramos won the regional and placed third in the national junior high piano competition.

To help the students finance their trips, the Hawaii Music Teachers Association will hold a fundraising concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 30, in Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawai'i- Manoa. Admission price is $10. Call 677-1168 for ticket and concert information.
