Vulcans sweep PacWest volleyball awards

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Hawai'i-Hilo placed three players — including player of the year Fabiane Seben — on the All-Pacific West Conference women's volleyball first team, the league announced yesterday.

Seben, a sophomore middle hitter, was joined by sophomore libero Laura Rodriguez and freshman outside hitter Hillary Hurley.

Others on the first team were freshman outside hitter Kelly Balanay of Hawai'i Pacific, junior outside hitter Noelle Filimoeatu of Brigham Young-Hawai'i, junior outside hitter Trina Kauliakamoa of Chaminade and sophomore setter LeeAnn Mapu of BYUH.

Bruce Atkinson was named PacWest coach of the year, Rodriguez was libero of the year, Hurley the freshman of the year and sophomore middle blocker Lauren Bayer was newcomer of the year to give the PacWest champion Vulcans a sweep of the awards.

TRIATHLON

OLYMPIC TRIALS MOVED TO TUSCALOOSA, ALA.

The U.S. Olympic triathlon trials, set for April 19, will be held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., instead of Honolulu, officials planning the competition announced yesterday.

USA Triathlon officials said funding for the race from the state of Hawai'i was not available, requiring a search for a new host city. Tuscaloosa was chosen because of its success in holding USAT Collegiate Nationals earlier this year, and the course matches that of the Olympic Games course in Beijing.

The Olympic trials will be the second event in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team selection process that will field the three American men and three women who will represent the U.S. in Beijing in August.
