UH alum Norwood Baylor's new defensive coordinator

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Brian Norwood, a Radford High and University of Hawai'i alum, has been named defensive coordinator at Baylor, head coach Art Briles announced.

Norwood spent the past seven seasons as safeties coach on Joe Paterno's Penn State staff.

"I am excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Briles at a great university like Baylor and all of the possibilities of this position," Norwood said in a story at the Baylor athletics Web site. "Coach Briles has a tremendous vision for the Baylor Football program and I look forward to helping him and the rest of the staff build a championship program."

Norwood is an 18-year collegiate coaching veteran who got his start as a graduate assistant at Arizona (1990-91). He also has coached at Richmond (outside linebackers), Navy (defensive backs) and Texas Tech (defensive backs) before going to Penn State in 2001.

Norwood graduated from Hawai'i in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in communications. He was a four-year letterman as a cornerback/safety for the Rainbow Warriors from 1983 to 1987.
