Visitor dies in 'raging surf' near Maui's Black Rock

The Maui News

KA'ANAPALI, Maui — A California man died in an apparent drowning Tuesday after he was caught in "raging surf" while swimming near Black Rock in Kaanapali, police told The Maui News.

The man was identified as Jeffrey Scott, a firefighter from Boulder Creek who was in his 50s, said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District.

He said the man appeared to be in distress in the ocean and was heard calling for help. Sheraton Maui hotel employees responded to the calls, and brought him to shore, where attempts were made to revive him, Hirata said.

He said Lahaina patrol officers responded to the 5:06 p.m. emergency call Tuesday along with medics and firefighters.

Efforts to revive the man failed, and he was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Hirata said.

Visitor-oriented policing officer Stuart Farberow is assisting Scott's family.
