City lifeguards today posted warning signs after a shark sighting near the Kaiaka State Recreation area in Hale'iwa. The shark sighting was reported about three miles off the Hale'iwa end of the park between noon and 12:30 p.m. by a surfer, said Honolulu Medical Emergency Services spokesman Brian Cheplic.
There are no city lifeguards stationed at the state park, which remained open, but signs were posted to warn beachgoers of the sighting, said Cheplic.
Cheplic advises beachgoers to exercise caution when the waters are murky.
