NFL: 0-13 Dolphins face tough decisions at QB

By Harvey Fialkov

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For nearly a quarter of a century, the No. 13 and the Dolphins were linked by excellence.

No longer. The unlucky number now represents the lowest point in franchise history, as the Dolphins fell to 0-13 after getting battered by the Buffalo Bills 38-17 on a snowy Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins are the first team since the 1986 Colts to start the season with 13 consecutive losses and are on track to supplant the 1976 0-14 Buccaneers as the worst team in NFL history.

"Obviously things haven't and aren't going our way, but we're managing to keep guys battling," said battle-weary coach Cam Cameron.

Instead of No. 13 Dan Marino slinging touchdowns, Cameron is now faced with another quarterback quandary, choosing between seemingly overmatched rookie John Beck—yanked after his third series of the first quarter and sixth turnover in the past two games—or inconsistent veteran Cleo Lemon.

Beck's fumble was pure slapstick, as he lost the ball while taking it back, allowing Bills safety George Wilson to snatch it in midair for an easy 20-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 before the smoke had cleared from the pregame fireworks.

Rookie returner Ted Ginn Jr. had already fumbled Brian Moorman's punt on the opening series to set up the first of four TD passes by Bills rookie quarterback Trent Edwards.

"Obviously, we haven't scored," Cameron said, referring to Beck's inability to mount a single touchdown drive in his four starts. "He's a young guy who has learned a lot. ... It's too early to put the final evaluation, but we got to play better at that position."

On the bright side of a gray day, the loss all but locked up the 2008 top draft pick.

Despite Cameron anointing Beck his starter for the "rest of the season" last month, Cameron's noncommittal responses suggested the job is once again up in the air for next Sunday's home game against the Ravens.

On his first play after relieving Beck, Lemon provided a brief spark with a seasonlong 54-yard rainbow connection to Ginn to set up the first of two touchdown runs by substitute running back Samkon Gado. But Lemon soon crumbled under Buffalo's pass rush, fumbling four times—losing one—and throwing two interceptions for a 49.8 passer rating.

"Anyone who plays this position wants to be in there," said Lemon, who completed 22 of 42 passes for 241 yards. (Beck) is going to be a fine quarterback in this league, and whenever I'm called upon I'm going to answer the bell."

While players are constantly being asked if they still believe in Cameron, they're also facing queries about their quarterback of choice.

"Cleo did a good job today," defensive end Jason Taylor said. "You look at it both ways. They kind of want to develop Beck and get ready for the future. ... Also, when things aren't going well, you've got to make a move and do what's best for today."

It's been a teamwide struggle as turnovers (five), the league's worst run defense (224 yards) and injuries were once again factors in allowing 38 points to the Bills' 31st-ranked offense. Five more starters were scratches, all contributing to a 24-7 deficit after the first quarter.

The Dolphins countered with 10 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 31-17 and were a bounce away from cornerback Will Allen recovering kicker Jay Feely's onside attempt for a chance at a late comeback.

Edwards' 70-yard strike to Lee Evans over Travis Daniels sealed the Dolphins' 16th consecutive loss, to ensure that today will be the one-year anniversary since their last victory.

The snow had let up, but the derisive chants from the suddenly playoff-contending 7-6 Bills rained down as the Dolphins trudged off the frozen field to, "0 and 16! 0 and 16!"

"You can't help but hear the fans," defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday said. "You see the signs, the 0-16 chant. Another loss. (It makes) you sick to your stomach. You don't want to be part of it."
