2 Waianae-bound Farrington lanes open for rush hour

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews are still working on a water main break near the off ramp at Ko Olina Resort that tied up rush hour traffic in both directions on Farrington Highway after 7:30 this morning. Parts of the highway each way were temporarily shut down because of the break.

However, by shortly before 10 a.m., the traffic snarl eased after the BWS, with the assistance of the Honolulu Police Department, opened three of the highway's four lanes — two lanes to Honolulu-bound traffic and one to Wai'anae-bound motorists.

DOT officials said that around 2 p.m. the situation would be reversed, opening two Wai'anae-bound lanes and leaving one for Honolulu bound traffic.

According to a BWS spokesperson, a 24-inch transmission main bringing water to reservoirs on the Wai'anae Coast broke at around 7:30 a.m.

Although no residents or business were left without water, BWS is asking people from Wai'anae to Nanakuli to restrict water usage to cooking, bathing and drinking for the remainder of the day in order to conserve the available supply.
