Shark-warning signs to remain at Haleiwa beach

Advertiser Staff

City lifeguards will keep the warning signs up today following a shark sighting near the Kaiaka State Recreation area in Hale'iwa yesterday.

"It's just a precaution because we still have brown water in the area and no lifeguards are staffed there," said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Emergency Services. "The lifeguards did a check today and didn't find any sharks in the area, but we're keeping it posted as a precaution."

The shark sighting was reported about three miles off the Hale'iwa end of the park between noon and 12:30 p.m. yesterday by a surfer.

Cheplic advises beachgoers to exercise caution when the waters are murky.
