Truck-theft suspect arrested in Kaneohe police-car crash

A 40-year-old Punchbowl man was arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly drove a stolen pickup truck into a police patrol car on Kahekili Highway.

The man, who has 18 prior convictions, had been identified earlier today for allegedly breaking into a car at Kualoa Regional Park. A witness called police with a description of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck used by the suspect to flee the park area.

Windward O'ahu plainclothes Crime Reduction Unit officers spotted the truck on Kahekili Highway shortly after noon.

The suspect pulled over on the right shoulder at the bottom of the "big dip" on the highway, police said. A police patrol car pulled over about 170 feet in front of the pickup truck.

Police said as CRU officers approached the suspect from across the street, ordering him to get out of the truck, the man drove off, crossed the center line and struck the patrol car head-on.

The officer in the car, a nine-year HPD veteran, was treated for minor injuries at Castle Medical Center and released.

The suspect was arrested at Kahekili Highway and Haiku Plantations Drive at 12:12 p.m. for attempted murder, auto theft and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. The pickup truck was reported stolen on Nov. 1.

The man's prior convictions include unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and drug offenses.

The attempted-murder investigation forced police to close a section of Kahekili Highway between Haiku Road and Hui Iwa Street for three hours.
