POLICE BEAT
Shark sighting warnings posted

Advertiser Staff

City lifeguards yesterday posted warning signs of a shark sighting near the Kaiaka State Beach Park in Hale'iwa.

The shark was reported about three miles toward the Hale'iwa end of the park between noon and 12:30 p.m. by a surfer, said Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Brian Cheplic.

There are no city lifeguards stationed at the state park, which remained open, but signs were posted to warn beachgoers, said Cheplic.

Cheplic advised beachgoers to exercise caution when the waters are murky.

SEARCH ENDS WITH NO SIGN OF HIKER

A Big Island search on Mauna Kea ended at 4 p.m. yesterday with no sign of a missing hiker from Michigan.

Bryan Murphy, 67, has not been seen since Wednesday, when he told traveling companions of plans to hike Mauna Kea. Murphy signed in at the 9,200-foot elevation Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at noon and spoke to a park employee about a mile up the Humu'ula Trail.

A cold front hit the Big Island two hours later, dropping about a foot of snow on the summit and creating a blizzard with 70-mph winds.

Yesterday was the fifth day of the search for Murphy in steep terrain covered by bushy ground cover. Twenty-five people covered about six square miles, from 13,400-foot elevation down to 7,000 feet.

The effort also included aerial and ground searches with two all-terrain vehicles.

There are no plans to continue searching unless new evidence or information turns up.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON SUNDAY DIES

A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Sunday night on Isenberg Street in Mo'ili'ili died early yesterday at Straub Hospital & Clinic.

The death was O'ahu's 20th pedestrian fatality of the year, matching the 2006 total, and 63rd traffic fatality of the year.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office is not releasing the man's name until his next of kin is notified.

An autopsy listed cause of death as multiple internal injuries and the manner as accidental.

The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. The man was taken to Straub with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

His condition, however, worsened and he died yesterday at 2:30 a.m.

POLICE SEARCH FOR HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER

A 13-year-old girl suffered minor injuries in a hit-and-run accident yesterday on North School Street near Kamehameha IV Road in Kalihi.

The incident was reported at about 8 a.m. The girl was treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released.

The suspect car is a white sedan driven by a man. Police are seeking to locate the vehicle and driver in a failure-to-render-aid investigation.

The girl, who was not crossing in a marked crosswalk, may have been hit by the car's passenger-side rear-view mirror, police said.

Correction: A shark was sighted Monday at the city's Kaiaka Bay Beach Park in Hale'iwa. The beach park was misidentified as a state recreation area in a previous version of this story.
