Pearl Harbor Shipyard sailor wins award

Advertiser Staff

Machinist's Mate 1st Class Samuel Coatney of Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard has been named as an overall winner of the Hawaii Navy League's 2007 Sea Service Awards.

The Honolulu Council of the Navy League presents Sea Service Awards annually to military personnel from Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard commands throughout Hawai'i.

The awards recognize excellence in duty and outstanding leadership. The league honored 46 military personnel at a luncheon at the Ford Island Conference Center.

The recipients of two overall Grand Awards — for a senior enlisted service member and a junior officer — were announced at the ceremony. Coatney was the winner in the enlisted category.

Coatney is the project quality engineer for the USS Key West ship maintenance period, where he serves as an advocate for quality and continuous improvement. He is also the Quality Assurance department's command fitness leader and financial specialist.

Also receiving honors was project material manager Eleanor Shimogaki, who won the George S.B. Walters Shipyard Service Award.

The award is used to specifically recognize the contributions of civilian Shipyard workers in keeping the Navy's fleet "Fit to Fight."
