PETA: Hawaii prisons in top 10 as 'vegetarian friendly'

Advertiser Staff

PETA released a statement today that it has researched which states are doing the best job of meeting prison inmates' jobs for meatless meals and that Hawaii ranks seventh on its Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Prison Systems.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wants every state to mandate vegetarian options for prisoners — just as the federal prison system did after a PETA member and then-federal inmate filed a lawsuit because he was being denied vegan meals, the news release said.

Idaho is ranked first on PETA's list, serving items such as lentil shepherd's pie, vegan pizza and hotcakes, meatless sausage and an array of vegan cakes, cookies and pies. Massachusetts — with its mock-chicken cutlets, nuggets and stew as well as the standby veggie burger — locked up second place. New Hampshire, Georgia, Utah, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kansas and North Dakota rounded out the top 10.
