Volunteers sought to help restore Makiki ahupuaa

Advertiser Staff

A Makiki Watershed Awareness Initiative volunteer workday has been scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 22.

The Department of Natural Resources Oahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access program and the Hawaii Nature Center are looking for volunteers to help restore a segment of the Makiki ahupua'a watershed.

This month's focus will be weeding around the native plants using weed wrenches, planting, watering and fertilizing native Hawaiian plants. As usual, the work will most likely be hot, itchy and dirty, but very rewarding, organizers said.

Participants are asked to bring a long shirt and pants, bug repellent, water, lunch or a snack, gloves and good shoes.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Makiki Forestry Baseyard (look for the brown and yellow forestry sign at the top of the hill) next to the new Hawaii Nature Center, off Makiki Heights Drive. There are bathrooms and drinking water nearby. Families are welcome but young children must be well-supervised.
