Search ends with no sign of missing Big Island hiker

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters have ended their search for a missing hiker on the slopes of Mauna Kea.

Yesterday marked the sixth day of searching for 67-year-old Brian Murphy of Michigan who was last seen prior to going hiking alone.

Weather near the summit of Mauna Kea has been marked with blizzard-like conditions throughout much of the search.

Temperatures yesterday ranged from 20 to 40 degrees with heavy snow much of the time, rescue team members said.

During the six-day search, no sign of Murphy was found.
