David Reed wrote recently that he lived a "full and interesting life," which included stints in the military, a distinguished career as an advertising executive and volunteer work for police and local community groups.

But he will be long remembered for his work on behalf of the local performing arts.

Reed, who with the late Tommy Aguilar helped launch the Broadway careers of several local artists, died at his Kahala home last week after a lengthy illness.

He was 72.

"He was very well-respected and was very important to the local performing arts community," said Emmett Yoshioka, who along with Reed and Jim Hutchinson co-produced Diamond Head Theatre's long-running musical "Scrooge."

In 1964, Reed co-founded Reed Kaina Schaller and Strom, which became one of the state's largest ad agencies until it was bought out in 1997.

Reed also served on the boards of the Diamond Head Theatre, the Manoa Valley Theatre and the Hawaii State Theater Council.

During the 1980s, he and Aguilar helped bring "A Chorus Line" to Hawai'i.

"He was a big believer in the performing arts," said Deena Dray, managing director of the Diamond Head Theatre.

Reed is survived by his brother, Thomas Reed; a nephew; and a niece. Private services are pending.
