The last time basketball fans in Hawai'i were able to watch Kyle Pape play, he scored 27 points to lead 'Iolani to its fourth straight state championship.

Pape, a 2005 'Iolani graduate from Honolulu, was named The Advertiser's Player of the Year after averaging 20.2 points per game, including 93 in three state tournament games.

The junior guard for Division II Colorado School of Mines (Golden, Colo.) hopes to put on a show for his hometown crowd once again when the Orediggers (4-3) play two non-conference games on O'ahu next weekend.

CSM, which specializes in engineering and applied sciences, meets Seattle Pacific on Dec. 21 at Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Cannon Activities Center and Hawai'i Pacific the following night at Blaisdell Arena.

"It's exciting," Pape said. "Not only just for me, but for my teammates. For them to see the culture that I grew up in, it's so much different from the Mainland. It'll be a good experience."

Pape, a 6-foot, 190-pound guard, is averaging a team-high 20.1 points per game in 32 minutes per game. He also leads the team in 3-point field goals made (14 of 41) and is shooting 84 percent from the free-throw line (37 of 44).

"He's done a tremendous job," said Orediggers' head coach Pryor Orser. "He's playing at a really, really high level."

Pape scored 24 points in a Nov. 24 game against visiting Hawai'i-Hilo.

"It was a little different," Pape said. "I grew up playing with (UH-Hilo forward and Kalaheo graduate) Sam Wilhoite, so it was good to see him."

Wilhoite's Mustangs lost in the state championship game to Pape's Raiders in 2004.

Pape has been the Orediggers' leading scorer in six of their seven games.

"He can shoot the 3-ball, has great mid-range, drives left, drives right," Orser said. "He will draw the best defensive player the rest of the (season)."
