The great thing about DVDs is that they can make either wonderful stocking stuffers or big gifts. And for the holiday season, plenty of individual titles and box sets are available to please the discerning collector.

Below are some examples of what is out there in various genres.

HOLIDAY FARE FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN

  • "MGM Holiday Collection" (MGM-Fox, $29.98) features three classic films from the MGM vaults: "The Bishop's Wife," starring Cary Grant and Loretta Young; "Pocketful of Miracles" with Bette Davis; and "March of the Wooden Soldiers," with Laurel and Hardy.

  • "The Original Christmas Classics" (Classic Media, $39.93), features a trio of perennial TV favorites: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," "Frosty the Snowman," "Frosty Returns," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" and "Cricket on the Hearth." A holiday music CD also is included.

  • "Pooh's Super Sleuth Christmas Movie" (Walt Disney Home Entertainment, $26.99).

  • "Winter Wonderland" (Fox-HIT Entertainment, ($14.98), features adventures with Barney, Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam, Kipper and Pingu the penguin.

  • "Charlie and Lola: How Many More Minutes Until Christmas?" (BBC Video, $14.98), another children's favorite show with a holiday theme.

    TWEENS, TEENS

  • "Bratz: The Movie" (Lionsgate, $29.98), the live-action film that features the popular characters comes with extras that include deleted scenes and two music videos.

    TV BOX SETS

  • "The X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition" (Fox, $329.98), features all nine seasons — with extras, plus the feature film, The X-Files: Fight the Future.

  • "Angel": Seasons 1-5 (Fox, $139.98), a 30-disc set with every episode from the popular Buffy spinoff.

  • "Gilmore Girls: The Complete Series" (Warner Home Video, $258.82), features all seven seasons with extras in a 42-disc set in a smart-looking retro doll case.

  • "Heeere's Johnny: The Definitive DVD Collection From the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (R2 Entertainment, $99.99). This 12-disc set would make an ideal gift for the parents or grandparents who miss the "King of Late Night."

  • "Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete Series" (HBO, $279.99), features all 210 episodes from all nine seasons on 44 discs, including extras.

  • "Twin Peaks: Definitive Gold Box Edition" (Paramount Home Entertainment, $108.99). David Lynch's cult series packaged in one 10-disc set with extras remains as quirky today as when it first aired. So grab a doughnut or two and enjoy.

    MOVIE BOX SETS

  • "The Coen Brothers Movie Collection" (MGM-Fox Home Entertainment, $49.98), is a set for movie connoisseurs who enjoy the works of these talented brothers. The titles include "Fargo," "Blood Simple," "Raising Arizona," "Miller's Crossing" and "Barton Fink."

  • "Docurama Awards Collection: Volumes 1 and 2" (Docurama, $199.95 each), features a combined 24 Academy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated documentaries.

    SCIENCE FICTION

  • "Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series" (BBC Video, $99.98), is a six-disc set with extras that should please fans of this long-running series.

    MUSIC

  • "Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back" (Docurama, $49.95), is a two-disc set that follows Dylan on his 1965 concert tour of England. If some of the movie looks familiar, it is because Todd Haynes copied sequences for his recent Dylan movie, "I'm Not There." The set comes with a 168-page companion book.

    MISCELLANEOUS

  • "Movies 101" (City Lights Home Entertainment, $39.95), features the first two seasons of the popular AMC show on four discs with professor Richard Brown going one-on-one with Martin Scorsese, Whoopi Goldberg, George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly, among others.
