NANAKULI
Nanaikapono Elementary marking 75th anniversary

Advertiser Staff

The public is invited to attend a commemoration of Nanaikapono Elementary School's 75th anniversary from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the school, 89-153 Mano Ave. in Nanakuli.

In addition to a celebration of the school's beginnings in 1933, there will be a rededication of the school's hula mound, recently improved thanks to a donation from Hawaiian Electric Co.

For much of its 74-plus years, Nanaikapono Elementary School rested on Hawaiian Home Lands, directly between Farrington Highway and the sea, at 89-195 Farrington Highway. In July 2003, the school packed up and moved a short distance away to its present Mano Avenue location on the mountain side of Farrington. The school's new campus is one of the most modern campuses in the state.

The school was originally known as Nanakuli School, but the first principal changed the name to Nanaikapono, which means "look to the way of righteousness."
