Hawai'i was shut out of the All-America teams for the first time in a decade yesterday. The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 27th annual Division I teams at the final four in Sacramento, Calif.

UH junior Jamie Houston, a second-team All-American last year, earned honorable mention this year. It is the first time since 1997 — the last time the 'Bows failed to reach an NCAA regional — that Hawai'i had no one on the teams. The school has earned 44 All-America certificates since the AVCA took over in 1981, third behind Nebraska and Stanford.

The AVCA added a third 12-player team in 2002.

Houston led the Rainbows in kills this season, averaging 5.51 a game, which ranks second nationally. She had 15 matches of 20 kills or more. Houston is fourth on the career kills list going into her final season with 1,611, behind Lily Kahumoku (1,822), Teee Williams (1,873) and 2003 national Player of the Year Kim Willoughby (2,598).

Kalani graduate Tamari Miyashiro, a sophomore libero for Washington, was named to the third team this year. Moanalua graduate Lena Yee, a junior libero at St. John's, also earned honorable mention along with Western Athletic Conferences seniors Amanda Nielson (Utah State) and Kim Oguh (New Mexico State).

Nebraska senior Sarah Pavan, the 2006 national Player of the Year, became the fourth to earn first-team honors all four years. The previous three — Bev Oden, Kerri Walsh and Logan Tom — played for Stanford. The 2007 national Player of the Year will be announced tomorrow. Texas' Juliann Faucette is the 2007 Freshman of the Year.

CARVALHO NAMED TO ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM

Portland State center Brennen Carvalho, a 2004 Kamehameha Schools graduate, was named to the Associated Press Football Championship Subdivision All-America first team yesterday.

Carvalho, a 6-foot-1, 315-pound senior from Kapa'a, Kaua'i, was a consensus All-American as a left guard in 2006, then made the move to center this season.

Carvalho, who was recently selected to the Walter Camp All-America team, will compete in the Hula Bowl on Jan. 12.

The three-time first-team All-Big Sky lineman started 39 consecutive games in his career.
