Gilmore wins on Maui; Abubo captures Triple Crown

Advertiser Staff

Australia's Stephanie Gilmore, who clinched the women's world championship yesterday, defeated Jessi Miley-Dyer of Australia, to win the Billabong Pro Maui today at Honolua Bay.

Gilmore, a 19-year-old tour rookie, won her fourth meet of the Association of Surfing Professionals Women's World Tour season and the sixth of her career.

Hawai'i's Megan Abubo clinched the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title following her quarterfinal finish in the Billabong Pro Maui, the third and final event. Abubo won the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Hale'iwa, reached the semifinals of the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach before being carried from the beach with a rib injury, then placed in a tie for fifth in Maui today. The Triple Crown title goes to the surfer who earned the most points during the three meets.

Abubo, 29, clinched the Triple Crown title when former world champion Layne Beachley failed to make the semifinals today.
