Autos: Kovalainen replaces Alonso on McLaren team

WOKING, England — Heikki Kovalainen replaced Fernando Alonso on the McLaren team for the upcoming Formula One season.

The Finn swaps places with Alonso, who has moved to Renault. McLaren made the announcement Friday.

Kovalainen will team up with Lewis Hamilton, who finished second in the drivers' championship behind Ferrari's Kimi Raikonnen. Kovalainen finished seventh.

McLaren is aiming for a trouble-free 2008 season after fallouts between Alonso and Hamilton and a spying scandal involving Ferrari. .

McLaren had its constructors' points voided and was fined a record $100 million in September by the World Motorsport Council for unauthorized possession of confidential Ferrari materials.
