Hawaii Kai sewer-fee hike hearing scheduled

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii American Water Co.'s proposed 16.7 percent hike in wastewater rates for single-family homes in Hawai'i Kai will be the subject of a Public Utilities Commission hearing on Jan. 7.

The company recently filed an application with the PUC saying it needed higher rates to continue its investments in system improvements. Under the proposal, single-family residential unit charges will rise to $63.65 from the current $54.55.

It's also proposed a similar percentage increase for multifamily residential units, an 8.7 percent increase for food-service operations and a 16.5 percent increase for nonfood commercial operations.

The public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hahaione Elementary School.
