Broadway's 'Doubt' has Honolulu premiere Jan. 16

Advertiser Staff

"Doubt," one of Broadway's most honored dramas about paranoia and pedophilia in the Catholic Church, opens Jan. 16 at Manoa Valley Theatre.

The play, by John Patrick Stanley, will make its Honolulu premiere. It won the 2005 Pulitzer Price for drama and a 2005 Tony Award for best play.

Vanita Rae Smith will guest-direct the production that will feature Jo Pruden as Sister Aloysius, Russell Motter as Father Flynn, Melanie Garcia as Sister James and Anette Kauahikaua as Mrs. Miller.

The play, set in a Bronx parochial school in 1964, is a battle of wills between the stern, absolutist Sister Aloysius and the doctrinally flexible Father Flynn, centering on her intuition that the priest is molesting a boy in her school. The drama explores the tenuous nature of faith and the inconsistency of justice, with allegations and doubts that make for provocative entertainment tapping lies and truths.

The show will run at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays, through Feb. 3.

Tickets are $25, with $5 discounts available for seniors and military; $15 for patrons 25 and under.
