CFB: Duke will hire Tennessee's Cutcliffe as coach

By JOEDY McCREARY
AP Sports Writer

DURHAM, N.C. — Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe was hired by Duke as its football coach Friday, The Associated Press has learned.

Cutcliffe will be introduced during a news conference tomorrow, a person familiar with the decision said on condition of anonymity Friday night because the announcement hadn't yet been made.

The former Mississippi coach emerged during the past week as Duke's top choice for the difficult task of building the Blue Devils into winners after the program lost all but 22 games during the past 13 seasons.

The 53-year-old coach said earlier in the day he had interviewed for the position, but denied receiving an offer. The decision to hire Cutcliffe apparently was reached during an evening meeting of Duke's search committee.
