Library hosts presentation on Makahiki Jan. 26

News Release

The Hawaii State Library has scheduled a program called "Learn about the Makahiki" on Saturday, Jan. 26, 11:30 a.m. in the Hawaii & Pacific Reading Room on the first floor. Admission is free.

This 45-minute presentation will be led by Hawaiian cultural expert Kapono Aluli Souza. He will share his knowledge and experiences about observing this very special season of the Hawaiian calendar.

Makahiki is a season which is not well understood in modern times, but was a very crucial part of the traditional Hawaiian year, during which warfare was forbidden and there was much gaming and feasting.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, and is recommended for teens and adults.

Call the library two weeks in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

For more information, call the Hawaii & Pacific Section at 586-3535.
