Judges Frank Stewart (poet, anthologist and editor of Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing), and Shelly Mecum ("The Watercolor Cat," and "God's Photo Album") have deliberated. Soon, you'll know the winners among the more than 100 writers who entered The Advertiser Island Life section's Holiday Fiction contest. The winning children's story will appear on Christmas Eve in Island Life, complete with illustrations, and a seasonal story for adults will appear on Christmas Day — our annual makana (gift) to you.

OH MY ... WHAT WOULD NANCY DREW DO?

Not content with solving crimes, girl detective Nancy Drew now dispenses advice in "The Official Nancy Drew Handbook," (Quirk Books, $16.95), by Penny Warner. Nancy has tips on everything from picking sidekicks to tapping Morse code with high heels. How to tell good guys from bad guys? Good guys make plans and call. Bad guys have bad clothes, shifty eyes and strange names. Stressed? Try a bubble bath, light a candle, play with a rubber ducky. Useful advice? Well, no, but amusing for readers of a certain age.

FINAL WORD

"I've briefly watched 'Dancing With the Stars.' ... I look at it more as a sports fan than as entertainment. But I'm a wonk, you know. I watch C-SPAN on Saturday nights."
