The Bunnies 4-H team took first place at last month's First Lego League robotics competition at Maui Community College.

The event was sponsored by the Maui Economic Development Board's Women in Technology Project and the Maui 4-H Youth Development Program.

The international First Lego League challenges students ages 9 to 14 years old to design and program robots to accomplish specific tasks related to an annual theme. This year's FLL challenge centered on renewable energy. Teams were asked to analyze their community's energy choices and create practical solutions to improve energy use.

Nearly 20 Maui 4-H members competed in teams to program their robots for the Nov. 17 competition. Judges watched as the robots moved solar panels, trees, power lines, dams and vehicles. After completing mandated tasks, students were interviewed about their project and judged on their technical presentation.

Members of the Bunnies 4-H team are Nicole Davis, Britney Delima, Kristen Hasegawa, Samantha Hill, Tiffany Keau and Nicole Nagamine. Lori Davis is their coach.
