Boxing: Green captures WBA light heavyweight title

Associated Press

PERTH, Australia — Australian Danny Green scored a unanimous decision over Stipe Drews for the Croatian's WBA light heavyweight title today.

Fighting for a world title for the first time in the weight class after moving up from super middleweight, Green (25-3, 22 KOs) had Drews backpedaling for much of the 12-round fight at Challenge Stadium. The judges' cards had Green in front 118-111, 118-110 and 120-108.

Drews (32-2, 13 KOs) has never been knocked out and gained the title from Italian Silvio Branco in April. His previous loss was to Australian Paul Briggs in Sydney in 2004.

Both Green and Drews weighed in at 174.24 pounds.

The 34-year-old Green formerly held the interim WBC championship at super middleweight after beating Eric Lucas in Canada four years ago.
