Preps: De La Salle wins Calif. state DI football title

Associated Press

CARSON, Calif. — Noah Perio caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Mike MacGillavray with 5:09 to play to give De La Salle of Concord a 37-31 victory over Centennial of Corona in the California Interscholastic Federation's Division I state championship last night.

The Spartans (13-0) became the first team from Northern California to earn a state football title since Berkeley won in 1924.

Centennial (13-2) recovered from a 31-7 deficit in the third quarter to force a 31-31 tie on Ryan Bass's 3-yard run with 8:17 to play.

On the ensuing series, Perio caught MacGillavray's pass between two defenders at the Huskies' 10-yard line and ran untouched into the end zone.

Centennial drove from its 29 to the Spartans' 30 on the next series but on fourth-and-2, Blair Wishom tackled Bass for a 5-yard loss with 2:50 remaining.

Bass rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. Huskies quarterback Matt Scott passed for 151 yards and two scores, and ran for another 90 yards. Both have made commitments to play for Arizona.

De La Salle's Travis Carrie caught a 29-yard scoring pass, ran for a 5-yard touchdown and made a 46-yard interception to set up a third touchdown.

The victory was the 330th for head coach Bob Ladouceur in his 29-year tenure at De La Salle.
