NFL: Titans stop Chiefs, 26-17, keep playoff hopes alive

By DOUG TUCKER

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a place that's been a house of horrors for young opposing quarterbacks, Vince Young made himself right at home.

Tennessee's second-year starter passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns and Rob Bironas kicked four field goals for a much-needed 26-17 victory over Kansas City that keeps the Titans (8-6) alive in the AFC wild-card chase.

With the stadium about half empty on the sunny, chilly afternoon, the Chiefs (4-10) lost their seventh in a row and closed out their most miserable home season in 30 years. Their 2-6 record in Arrowhead Stadium, where they used to be nearly invincible, was their worst in a non-strike year since the 1977 team was 1-6 in a 14-game season.

The Chiefs had won 21 of their previous 24 against quarterbacks in their first or second year as starters making their initial appearance in Arrowhead. But Young made almost no mistakes while completing 16 of 26 passes with no interceptions.

Roydell Williams caught four passes for 94 yards, including touchdowns of 16 and 41 yards. Bironas, who came in leading the NFL in field goals, connected from 37, 37, 30 and 25 yards for the Titans, who had lost three of four on the road and dropped behind Cleveland and Buffalo in the wild-card race.

Brodie Croyle was 25-for-43 for 217 yards in his fourth NFL start but was intercepted twice.

The Titans took the opening kickoff 60 yards in eight plays to seize a 7-0 lead, with Young connecting for 17 yards to Justin Gage and 16 yards to Eric Moulds before Williams took a short pass and turned it into a 16-yard scoring play.

But the Titans' only score the rest of the first half turned out to be a 37-yard field goal after Kansas City's Eddie Drummond muffed a punt and Vincent Fuller recovered at the 21. LenDale White's 10-yard run on second down gave the Titans a first-and-goal from the 8. But on third down, Tamba Hali and Jimmy Wilkerson sacked Young for 7-yard loss.

On Kansas City's first touchdown drive, Croyle converted four third-down situations, including a 10-yard touchdown play when Samie Parker took the pass, twisted away from safety Calvin Lowry, and stretched into the end zone.

The Chiefs converted two third downs and one fourth-down play and took the lead on Croyle's 5-yard TD pass just before the end of the half to Kris Wilson, who dragged two tacklers into the end zone to make it 14-10.

After John Carney's 36-yard field goal gave the Chiefs a 17-13 lead, Williams got behind safety Jarrad Page and cruised in on a 41-yard catch-and-run for a 20-17 advantage.

Rookie safety Michael Griffin's third interception in three games gave the Titans the ball on the Kansas City 28 in the third quarter and led to Bironas' 30-yarder and a 23-17 Tennessee lead.
