Wind advisory in effect for Maui, Big Island, Lanai

Advertiser Staff

A wind advisory issued for the slopes of Haleakala on Maui and for the summits and Kohala regions of the Big Island has been updated to include Lana'i, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition, the weather service issued a gale warning for the Alenuihaha Channel and the southeast waters of the Big Island. A small craft advisory is in effect for all other waters and channels. A high surf advisory is in effect for all east-facing shores of Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Maui and the Big Island. A gale warning means winds in the range of 39 mph are sustained for a minute or longer.

The gusty tradewinds will decrease a bit by tonight as a high pressure system to the north weakens, the weather service said. Still, it will be breezy through the first half of the work week, with some windward and mauka showers.

The forecast also calls for scattered showers, mainly before midnight; partly cloudy skies, with a low around 69 degrees. East winds should blow around 18 mph with gusts as high as 23 mph.
