Kevin Hayashi, Alex Ching earn Sony Open golf berths

Aloha Section Player of the Year Kevin Hayashi and Alex Ching earned slots in next month's Sony Open in Hawai'I after winning playoffs today at the local qualifier.Hayashi and John Lynch both shot 1-over-par 73 at windy and wet Waialae Country Club. They beat out 13 other Aloha Section PGA members.
Both parred the first extra hole, with Lynch getting up and down from behind the green. Both hit their tee shots on the second playoff hole (par-3 second) into the bunker. Lynch's ball plugged and he wasn't able to get it out on the first try. Hayashi's bunker shot stopped on the fringe and he nearly chipped in, winning the playoff with bogey.
Ching, a Punahou senior, won the lone amateur spot by beating 13-year-old Lorens Chan on the second playoff hole, with par. Both shot 75, along with Maui's Taeksoo Kim, who bogeyed the first extra hole to drop out of the playoff.
The 2007 Sony Open is Jan. 10 to 13 at Waialae.
