Oahu permit purchase of firecrackers starts Dec. 26

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department today reminded the public a permit is required for the purchase of consumer fireworks or firecrackers, which will be sold at licensed retail sites from Dec. 26 until midnight Dec. 31.

Permits are available at any satellite city hall during normal business hours but not at fire stations. Permits cost $25 each and multiple permits may be purchased. Licensed retailers are prohibited from selling more than 5,000 individual firecrackers per permit.

Firecrackers may be set off from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2008.

The Fire Department says although consumer fireworks are legal in Hawai'i, they are still risky and dangerous. Improper use of fireworks can cause severe injuries and present a significant risk of starting fires, HFD says.

The use of aerial fireworks is prohibited unless a special permit has been issued by Fire Chief Kenneth Silva.

Four public fireworks displays are scheduled on O'ahu on Dec. 31: Fronting 4599 Kahala Ave., 9:15 p.m.; fronting the Halekulani Hotel, midnight; Aloha Tower Marketplace, midnight, and Ihilani Resort & Spa, midnight.
