Playwright's blood-alcohol level was 3 times legal limit

Advertiser Staff

Local playwright and author Lisa Y. Matsumoto had a blood-alcohol content of .242, more than three times the legal limit, when she drove the wrong way down the H-1 Freeway early Friday and collided head on with another woman, seriously injuring her and killing herself.

Matsumoto died of blunt force injuries to the neck caused by a motor vehicle collision and "acute alcohol intoxication," a blood alcohol count of .242, played a factor in her death, according to the office of the city medical examiner, which earlier reported that Matsumoto's blood-alcohol concentration was at least twice the legal limit.

A blood-alcohol concentration of .08 is considered legally intoxicated in the state of Hawai'i.

Matsumoto's blood-alcohol level was determined from blood drawn from her body after she was admitted to The Queen's Medical Center early Friday morning.
