DRUG DISCOUNT PROGRAM KICKS OFF

A new prescription drug discount card program will be announced today by Mayor Mufi Hannemann and City Council chairwoman Barbara Marshall.

All O'ahu residents will be eligible for the free program, which has provided discounts averaging 20 percent at the 59,000 participating pharmacies on the Mainland.

The program is designed mainly for uninsured or underinsured residents. Discounts apply to prescription drugs that are not covered by health insurance, as well as prescriptions for pets at participating retail pharmacies.

The discount cards are expected to be available soon at satellite city halls. There will be no age or income limit. More than 500 U.S. counties are participating in the program, which is being offered through an agreement between the National Association of Counties and pharmaceutical services giant CVS Caremark.

The company negotiates with pharmacies to offer discounts, then collects a small fee from them for each transaction. Pharmacies participate because they anticipate that will attract customers who make additional purchases.
