Kalihi boy in critical condition following moped crash

Advertiser Staff

A 17-year-old Kalihi boy was critically injured last night when the moped he was riding collided with a pickup truck about 11:05 p.m. near the intersection of Kalihi and Kaumuali'i streets.

Police traffic accident investigators said the moped rider was speeding south-bound on Kalihi Street when the pickup truck, which was heading north on Kalihi Street, turned left in front of the moped.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said the moped did not have its lights on at the time of the crash.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered injuries to his head, limbs and internal organs, and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said

The 48 year-old Kalihi man who was driving the Ford F-150 pickup truck was not injured in the crash, police said. Speeding and the use of alcohol or drugs were not an issue on his part, police said.

Kalihi Street was closed for several hours while investigators examined the crash site.
