NFL: Eagles' linebacker Spikes needs surgery

By BOB LENTZ
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Takeo Spikes needs surgery on a torn rotator cuff, and the Philadelphia Eagles said today they will place the veteran linebacker on injured reserve.

Spikes, injured during Sunday's 10-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, will have surgery on Friday and miss the last two games of the season. Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation.

The injury ends a solid first season with the Eagles for Spikes, acquired in a three-player deal from Buffalo in March. Predictably, he is not happy about being placed on IR.

"It was frustrating," he said. "It's still frustrating up until this point, and I can only imagine it's going to get worse."

Spikes said the injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game while he was making a tackle.

"I just got caught and tried to make a tackle and reached my arm out," he said. "I think the angle of how my arm got caught; it was the right angle, the right degree and it just did it."

Spikes finished the series and left the game the next series.

Spikes ranks second on the Eagles (6-8) with 139 tackles, including 90 solo tackles. He also has a sack.

Coach Andy Reid said Spikes would have undergone the surgery even if the team was still in contention for a playoff berth. He said Spikes was coming along well in his first season with the defensive scheme.

"As you saw him get familiar with the defense ... he was playing at a tremendous level here over the last half of the season," Reid said.

Rookies Stewart Bradley and Akeem Jordan will rotate at linebacker in place of Spikes, Reid said. Longtime practice squad player Michael Gasperson will take Spikes' place on the roster. Gasperson can be used at both tight end and receiver.

Spikes is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. He was a first-round draft choice of Cincinnati in 1998 and spent five seasons with the Bengals before signing with Buffalo in 2003.
