Noise, air activity to increase over Kaneohe today

Advertiser Staff

A group of five A/V-8B jets from Marine Attack Squadron 214 will be arriving today at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Air Facility at about 5 p.m. from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.

Residents may notice increased noise levels this evening during their arrival and again on Friday when they depart, a Marine Corps news release said.

VMA-214 is a Marine Corps fighter squadron consisting of AV-8B Harrier jets capable of vertical and short take-offs and landings. It is attached to Marine Aircraft Group 13, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The squadron's call sign is known as "Black Sheep" from World War II.

It is best known for one of its commanding officers, Medal of Honor recipient and flying ace Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington.

The squadron's arrival in Hawai'i allows crews and pilots to rest before continuing on to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz.
