CFB: VanGorder named South Carolina def. coordinator

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Atlanta Falcons linebackers coach Brian VanGorder will take over as defensive coordinator for the University of South Carolina.

South Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Fink said a news conference was planned for today to introduce in the former Georgia defensive coordinator.

VanGorder will replace Tyrone Nix, who became the defensive coordinator at Mississippi earlier this month.

VaGorder came to the Falcons this season with head coach Bobby Petrino, who quit last week, 13 games into his first season to take over at Arkansas.

Fink did not disclose details of VanGorder's contract. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has said the Gamecocks' next defensive coordinator would be paid more than Nix's $195,000 salary.

On Tuesday, Spurrier hired Maryland assistant Ray Rychleski to serve as special teams coordinator. Fred Chatham, a co-coordinator for South Carolina's special teams, will not be retained, Fink said.
