NAPILI
Organic garden growing at Maui Prep Academy

Advertiser Staff

Kapalua Farms is partnering with Maui Preparatory Academy to bring an organically managed garden and farmer's market to the school's West Maui campus.

The garden plots, one for each grade, are located behind the school's B-Building and will be developed with the help of Kapalua Farms' EARTH University research interns. The student interns from Costa Rica are studying abroad for a semester to work on sustainable agricultural projects at Maui Land & Pineapple Co. They will use their required community service hours over the next four months to teach Maui Preparatory Academy teachers and students how to prepare, plant and harvest the garden.

Kapalua Farms also is hosting a farmer's produce stand from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Thursdays in the school's pickup area.

Eventually, upper-school students will assist with running the market. Kapalua Farms has pledged half the proceeds generated by the farmers market to Maui Preparatory Academy to fund the school garden project.
