Soccer: U.S. World Cup qualifying schedule set

Associated Press

CHICAGO — The United States would play its first-ever World Cup qualifier at Cuba on Sept. 6 if both nations advance to the semifinals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

The Americans, who have a first-round bye, were drawn last month to play Barbados or Domenica in the first round. The U.S. team would open at home from June 11-14 and play on the road from June 18-21, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Thursday.

If the United States advances to the semifinals, it would open the six-game round on Aug. 20 at the winner of Guatemala's series against St. Lucia or the Turks and Caicos Islands, then play on Sept. 6 at the winner of Cuba's series against Aruba or Antigua and Barbuda.

The U.S. team would play its first home game on Sept. 10 against the winner of Trinidad and Tobago's series against Bermuda or Cayman Islands.

Assuming the favorites all reach the semifinals, the Americans would host Cuba on Oct. 11, play at T&T on Oct. 15, then close at home against Guatemala on Nov. 19.

The United States is 5-1-1 against the Cubans, but has never played in Cuba. The teams have not met in a World Cup qualifier since 1949, when they played twice in Mexico City. Following a 1-1 tie against the Cubans, the Americans won the final match 5-2 and advanced to the 1950 tournament in Brazil, where they upset England.

The top two teams in the semifinals advance to the six-nation regional finals in 2009. The top three teams in the finals qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and the No. 4 team plays a home-and-home series against the fifth-place nation in South America for another berth.
