Those purchasing DVDs may not get full picture

By Michael Tsai

As part of the fallout of timing errors at this month's 35th annual Honolulu Marathon, runners who ordered personalized DVDs of their race may not get quite as many digital glimpses of themselves as they had hoped.

MyMarathonDVD, a service administered by Hawai'i-based Sports Media Productions, offers high-resolution videos of the Honolulu Marathon and other major races. Using video cameras set up at designated points of the course, SMP is able to combine video of individual runners with an overview and highlights of the race.

However, MyMarathonDVD relies on accurate reports from the marathon's chip-based timing system to locate and identify runners on the course, and this year a new timing system developed and administered by SAI Timing and Tracking failed to accurately or completely record many split and finish times. (SAI and the Honolulu Marathon Association have attributed the timing problems to heavy rains that short-circuited the system, runners improperly wearing the new microchip-implanted tag, and other factors.)

While extensive efforts are being made to ensure that each of the estimated 24,300 runners receives an accurate finish time, marathon association president Jim Barahal said it's possible that some MyMarathonDVDs "might not be as complete" with regard to personalized video.

A team of trained video reviewers has been working to manually identify each finisher in the race, using video captured at the finish line by SMP for MyMarathonDVD. Production of the DVDs cannot begin until that work is completed, Barahal said.

"We're making every effort to review each finisher and we're doing whatever is humanly possible to get as much data as we can to SMP for (MyMarathonDVD)," Barahal said.

Barahal said the personalized DVDs, which sell for $49.95, will likely include video of each client's finish, as well as "some splits."

According to the MyMarathonDVD Web site, video is recorded at six separate areas along the course: the starting line, 10K, half-marathon, Hawai'i Kai, Diamond Head and the finish line.

According to the site, orders are typically mailed out in six weeks. The site guarantees that runners will see themselves "numerous times."

"I think people will be satisfied with what they'll be able to get," Barahal said. "If not, we always guarantee that they can get their money back."
