UH basketball team loses again, falling to St. John's

Anthony Mason Jr. scored 17 points and three others scored in double figures as St. John's defeated the University of Hawai'i, 68-62, today in a consolation bracket game of the Rainbow Classic at Stan Sheriff Center.

Matt Gibson scored 17, Bobby Nash 12 and Bill Amis 10 for UH, which was playing in the daytime round for the first time since 1995.

UH is 3-6 under first-year coach Bob Nash. St. John's is 5-3.

D.J. Kennedy had 12 points and 11 rebounds for St. John's. Justin Burrell scored 12 and Eugene Lawrence 10.

UH had more rebounds (30-24), took 16 more field-goal attempts, had more assists (14-10) and had fewer turnovers (18-16) than St. John's.

UH was just 2-for-17 from 3-point range. UH shot 42.9 percent while St. John's shot 60 percent.
