Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old man was charged yesterday with four counts of first-degree robbery and three counts of kidnapping stemming from a reported robbery of four teenagers at the sugar mill skate park in 'Aiea.

James T. Malgama of a Pali Highway address was charged at 10:50 a.m., police said.

Family Court is reviewing his status since the alleged Aug. 20 robberies were committed while Malgama was a juvenile.

Malgama is the second person arrested in the robbery investigation. He was taken into custody Wednesday at 465 South King St. at 2 p.m.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Dec. 4 and charged in Family Court with first-degree robbery and kidnapping, police said.

CAUTION ADVISED OVER TIMES STRIKE

Police yesterday issued an advisory to motorists to anticipate delays and obey instructions of officers assigned to strike posts at Times Supermarket locations, where meat department workers went on strike Monday.

The advisory stems from an incident Wednesday at the Waimalu Times parking lot in which an argument between a motorist and a picket escalated to the point where the driver allegedly struck the picket and attempted to flee, HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said.

A police officer who saw the incident said a male picket, 36, was standing in front of a car trying to exit the parking lot. The driver accelerated his car, struck the picket and attempted to drive off.

Police arrested the driver, a 65-year-old Aliamanu man, for investigation of second-degree assault.

The picket was treated for lacerations on his knee and released after being examined at a hospital, police said.

Police officers assigned to a strike post are responsible for preserving the peace, protecting life and property, and protecting the civil rights of all parties, Yu said.

Yu said motorists should wait for a police officer to stop the picket line and not try to force their way through.

EVENT TO HELP SENIORS 'FIT' CAR

To drive down the rate of crashes and injuries among older drivers, the state Department of Health Injury Prevention and Control Program will host a "CarFit" event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 4, at Kapi'olani Community College. CarFit is a national program that uses trained professionals to help older drivers "fit" their car better. The free educational program is sponsored by the American Automobile Association.

"We're offering this free service for the first time in Hawai'i to help older drivers, age 65 and above, increase their safety while driving," said Eric Tash, DOH Injury Prevention Program manager.

CarFit will use trained occupational and physical therapists to evaluate older drivers' ability to operate a vehicle safely by evaluating the "fit" of the driver to the vehicle.

Assessments are based on many of the car's features and functions, such as head restraints, mirrors, line of sight over the steering wheel and the position of the driver in relation to air bags.

All drivers will receive a 15-minute, 12-point check to help them fit better and feel more comfortable in their car.
