Young instrumentalists recently competed in Honolulu for a chance to go to the Southwest Region competition at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M. Jan. 18 to 20.

Regional winners will go on to compete with winners from six other regions in Denver, Colo., March 29 to April 2 at the Music Teachers National Association conference.

Competing in New Mexico will be Teresa Yi Ou, Junior High String representative; T.J. Tario, Junior High Piano winner; Asia Kiyomi Doike, Senior High String winner; Maile Cha, Senior High Piano winner; Chandra Susilo, Young Artist String (college level) winner; and Heejin Kang; Young Artist Piano representative.

All will compete with winners from California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

In the past, Hawai'i has performed very well in the regional and national competitions. In 2006, Zoe Doike-Martin won both the regional and national high school string competitions and Andrew Ramos won the regional and placed third in the national junior high piano competition.

To help the students finance their trips, the Hawaii Music Teachers Association will hold a fundraising concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Orvis Auditorium, University of Hawai'i-Manoa. Admission price is $10. Call 677-1168 for ticket and concert information.
