Hawaii stock index rises for sixth straight session

The Bloomberg-Honolulu Advertiser Hawai'i Index rose for a sixth consecutive trading session as gains by Hoku Scientific and Barnwell Industries helped erase declines by other issues.

The 11-member stock index climbed 1.40 points to 97.42, as four issues rose and seven declined.

The gainers were led by Hoku, which rose 22 percent, or $2.29, to $12.69. Hoku's shares have risen 372 percent this year after beginning the year at $2.61. Bloomberg Data shows short interest in the stock stands at 31 percent.

Barnwell's shares rose $1.73, or 16.7 percent, to $12.06.
