Cycling: Austria's Matzbacher killed in car crash

Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria — Cyclist Andreas Matzbacher was killed in a car crash in southern Austria. He was 25.

Police in the city of Graz confirmed today that the crash happened on Monday and that Matzbacher died of his injuries that day.

Matzbacher began his professional career with Italy's Saeco in 2004 and rode for Austria's Team Volksbank at the time of his death.

"At the age of 25, 'Matzi' was torn out of this life far too early on Christmas Eve and leaves a deep hole in our midst," Team Volksbank said in a statement.

The Austrian Cycling Federation also issued a statement saying it "mourns the loss of one of the greatest talents and an important pillar of domestic cycling."
