Popular trailhead opens after road construction

Advertiser Staff

Haleakala National Park has reopened the Halemau'u Trailhead after it was closed for four months to accommodate construction on the summit road.

Road crews stabilized the roadbed near the Halemau'u parking lot, which served as a construction staging area during the project.

The trailhead at the 7,000-foot elevation marks the start of the Halemau'u Trail, which provides options for a two-mile round trip hike to the edge of the valley, a 10-mile round trip down steep switchbacks to Holua Cabin and the Silversword Loop, or longer hikes into the crater floor.
