Advertiser Staff

Maui fire officials said a fire at 12:56 a.m. yesterday caused an estimated $350,000 in damage to Charley's Restaurant and Bar in Pa'ia.

There were no injuries and the business was not open at the time.

Five fire engines responded to the alarm and the fire was extinguished at 2:42 am. The cause of fire is under investigation.

FIREWORKS ON SALE STARTING TODAY

Fireworks go on sale at licensed retail sites today until midnight Dec. 31.

Fireworks play is restricted from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

Permits, required for the purchase of fireworks or firecrackers, will be available at O'ahu satellite city halls, but not at fire stations. Permits cost $25 each and multiple permits may be purchased.

Licensed retailers are prohibited from selling more than 5,000 firecrackers per permit. Firework vendors this year are not allowed to sell permits. Aerial fireworks are prohibited unless a special permit has been issued by Honolulu Fire Chief Kenneth Silva.

Permits are not required for novelty fireworks, such as sparklers, snakes and fountains that emit effects no higher than 12 feet off the ground.

Four public fireworks displays are scheduled on O'ahu on Dec. 31: Fronting 4599 Kahala Ave., 9:15 p.m.; fronting the Halekulani Hotel, midnight; Aloha Tower Marketplace, midnight; and Ihilani Resort & Spa, midnight.
